Land ownership, property rights topic of discussion Saturday, March 1

Land ownership and property rights granted by the U.S. Constitution will be the topic of discussions this Saturday, March 1, in Jefferson.

The morning will begin with a public forum on Summit Carbon Solution’s proposed carbon capture pipeline and property rights at 8:30 am at the Greene County Historical Museum at 219 E. Lincoln Way in Jefferson.

Greene County attorney Thomas Laehn will share his views on property owners’ rights as Summit Carbon Solution seeks to construct 37 miles of pipeline to transport liquified carbon dioxide to North Dakota, where it will be pumped underground for storage.

Laehn believes the use of eminent domain to benefit a private company should not be allowed. Laehn’s presentation will outline the basis of American constitutional law on which he anchors his belief.

Attendees will also hear suggestions for interacting with the pipeline company and its representatives. The meeting will conclude at 10:15. The meeting is hosted by the Greene County Democrats as a service to the community.

The monthly “Meet Your Legislator” forum will begin at 10:30 am at the Welcome Center at Thomas Jefferson Gardens, a short walk west of the museum.

State Sen. Jesse Green and State Rep. Carter Nordman are scheduled to participate in a Q & A session with constituents. The monthly meeting – the first Saturday of the month during the Iowa legislative session – is sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson Gardens board.

Several bills have been introduced this session dealing with Summit Carbon Solutions’ proposed pipeline. The morning offers an opportunity to learn more about the proposed pipeline and the use of eminent domain, and to ask questions and share ideas with Greene County’s elected legislators and any relevant topic. All are encouraged to attend. Persons who want more information can call 515-370-4002 or email greenecodemocrats@gmail.com
